Tomato pappu/tomato lentils 

Today I’ve prepared Andhra style no onion no garlic tomato pappu. This is so comforting and a great accompaniment to hot steamed rice or any roti. Hence it is no onion no garlic recipe the recipe can be prepared during any Pooja rituals. Here I present tasty tomato pappu which is served along with other delicacies. Ingredients:

Tomatoes: 7/8 nos.

Toor dal/red pigeon lentils: One cup

Turmeric: Generous pinch 

Salt: As required 

Red chilli powder: 1 tsp 

Curry leaves: A sprig

Coriander leaves: Few

Tempering:

Oil: 1 1/2 tbsp

Mustard seeds: One tsp

Cumin seeds: One tsp

Asafoetida: A pinch 

Red chillies: 2 nos.

Method of preparation:

 🍅Take one cup of toor dal, rinse with water once and add two and half cups of water and keep aside. Rinse well tomatoes with water and chop them into fine pieces.

🍅Keep toor dal with water and chopped tomatoes in separate vessels and steam them in a pressure cooker for five whistles. Switch off the flame and allow the pressure to cool down completely.

🍅Once the pressure settles on its own, open the lid and take out the cooked tooor dal and tomatoes too.

🍅Heat kadai or copper bottomed vessel and pour oil for tempering. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. 

🍅When mustard splutter add two broken red chillies and sauté for few seconds.

🍅Now add cooked/steamed tomato pieces and sauté for two minutes.

🍅Also add curry leaves and chopped coriander leaves too. 

🍅Now using a ladle mash the cooked toor dal and mix well. 

🍅Add this cooked toor dal to the tomato mixture. Also add required amount of salt and red chilli powder. 

🍅Bring the entire mixture to boil . If required add half cup of water. 

🍅Blil further more and switch off the flame. Now the delicious tomato pappu is ready to serve as an accompaniment to hot steamed rice.
