Course: Accompaniments/Chutneys
Cuisine: South Indian
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
Roasted Peanuts: 3 tbsp
Roasted gram: 3 tbsp
Tamarind: Small lemon sized
Salt: As required
Green chillies: 3/4 nos.
Tempering:
Oil: 1 tbsp
Bengal gram: 1 tsp
Black gram: 1 tsp
Mustard: 1 tsp
Cumin: 1 tsp
Asafoetida: A pinch
Curry leaves: A sprig.
Method of preparation:
1. Take equal quantities of roasted peanuts and roasted gram. If roasted peanuts are not available, take three tbsp of peanuts and roast them in dry kadai till nice aroma comes. Allow them to cool down and remove the skin of them.
2. Take a mixer grinder, put roasted peanuts, roasted gram, salt, green chillies and tamarind. Before adding tamarind, soak the tamarind in enough water for 15 minutes.
3. First Grind the ingredients to get a fine powder.
4. Now add tamarind water and grind to a smooth paste. Add little water if required. Grind once again to get the desired consistency.
5. Transfer the chutney onto a serving bowl.
6. Heat small kadai and pour oil for tempering. When the oil becomes hot, put Bengal gram, black gram, mustard and cumin seeds. When mustard splutter add a pinch of Asafoetida and curry leaves.
7. Switch off the flame and pour the tempering onto the chutney.
8. Now the delicious peanut and roasted gram chutney is ready to serve with karam dosa.
Tips:
1. I’ve prepared the chutney without adding coconut. This chutney can be prepared adding 2 tbsp of grated coconut. Garlic flakes and one inch ginger piece can also be added for additional flavour.
2. Green chillies can be replaced with red chillies too.
